Signs Tell Lies

By yazsrour

I agree with Berger that signs can be used to tell a lie.  We all know how billboards and commercials can be misleading, but I will use photographs and painting as an example.  As soon as you take a picture of a painting, you are no longer looking at that painting.  It becomes something else because now it is an image of that painting.  If you look at the picture and then go look at the original, you will see that the replica lacks something. It is not authentic like the actual work.  Another example is looking at a painting or peice of art and trying to make sense of it.  One can have a very good idea in mind, but as soon as they see the description of that artwork, they find out that it means something totaly different.  For example, I was looking  at a painting by Van Gogh of a cornfield landscape and flying birds.  When I looked at the painting, I had happy feelings and the thought of freedom came to mind.  Later I found out that this was the last painting by Van Gogh before he committed suicide.  This is a very good example of a picture telling a lie.  I interpretted the meaning of the picture in a way that was completely different that what it really stands for.  As I thought of life and happiness, the picture actually represented death and sorrow.
