According to Arthur Berger, watching television involves five focal points that are necessary to understand the action of consuming media. I will use the show Grey’s Anatomy (abbreviated GA) as an example. An episode of the show is the text, which is considered to be the content that is presented. This includes all the events that occur in the episode and the messages for the viewer. Trauma and medical issues are introduced, as well as personal situations that occur between the characters. At the end of the show, one of the residents, Meredith Grey points out a conflict or a major issue of the episode. The audience of GA are most likely going to be pre-med students, medical students, or anyone interested in the healthcare field. Even though this show deals mainly with medicine and medical professionals, individuals with other interests could still be attracted to the work from only watching one episode unintentionally. There are many artists that are involved in creating the show. They range from script writers to producers to design and music creators to the actors who actually present the message to the audience. The viewers are considered to be part of an entity or a society, which in this case can be America or any other country where the audience view the show via internet (or even cell phone!). The medium is the device through which the message is consumed and here it is obviously the televison, which carries the program.
